There are currently 1.2 million unpaid carers living in poverty in the UK, with 400,000 carers living in deep poverty, according to a report by Carers UK.
“Unpaid carers are a large and diverse population – around 5.7 million across the UK. Yet large numbers live in poverty and deep poverty – this is when someone’s resources are 50% below the poverty line.”
How Carers First Can Help

Jayne’s Story
Jayne, a carer, reached out to Carers First and was guided to the Household Support Fund. She said:
“Thanks to Carers First, I accessed the Household Support Fund. The fund helped my family pay the electricity bill and other essentials. With rising prices, we just couldn’t make up the difference quickly enough. For us, it reduced stress and helped provide the essentials we needed. Without that, we would have been forced to make more sacrifices.”
Marianne’s Story
Marianne, a retired hospital care worker, now cares for her husband who was diagnosed with Parkinson’s at age 50. She shared her experience:
“I got in touch with Carers First, and they answered immediately. The team listened and gave great advice. They even organised a grant for me to attend my son’s wedding in London, which allowed me a bit of respite from my caring duties. That was something I wouldn’t have been able to do without their help.”
