Scouts are do-ers and give-it-a-go-ers! Yes, we go camping, hiking, swimming, abseiling, cycling and canoeing. But we also get to hang out with our friends every week – having fun, playing games, working in a team and taking on new challenges.
Scouts prepares young people with skills for life – helping them speak up and play their part. We’re talking about teamwork, leadership and resilience & skills that have helped Scouts become everything from teachers and social workers to astronauts and Olympians.
We believe in bringing people together. We celebrate diversity and stand against intolerance, always. We’re part of a worldwide movement, creating stronger communities and inspiring positive futures.
The Southend Estuary Scout District has 600 young people across 13 Scout Groups covering Southend, Prittlewell, Southchurch, Thorpe Bay, Shoebury and Wakering. Each group offers Beavers, Cubs and Scouts for young people aged 6 – 13 years and two groups now offer Squirrels for 4 – 6 years. Young people aged 14 – 18 years can join one of the 3 Explorer Scout Units and then on to a Network Unit for those aged 18 – 25 years.
Southend Estuary Scouts are calling on local people to help shape the next generation and give back to our community. As our young members (and waiting lists) continue to grow in number, so too does our need for enthusiastic, reliable volunteers. Whether you enjoy working directly with young people or prefer supporting behind the scenes, there’s a role for you and a chance to make a real difference.

Volunteer Roles Available:
Working Directly with Young People
There are lots of ways you can get involved, from helping out occasionally on a parent rota or volunteering your time as a leader to support local Scouting.
You might choose to volunteer with Squirrels, Beavers, Cubs, Scouts or Explorers. Our volunteering opportunities are varied and flexible. Because whether you’re helping a leader to run an activity in the local hall, organising a night away, or buttering 120 slices of bread for a group of very hungry eleven-year-olds – no two Scout meetings are the same. The difference you make, though, is always great.
Administrative & Governance Roles
You don’t have to work directly with young people to give them skills for life
Trustees play a key part in Scouts and keep an eye on our vision. They make sure young people have the best experience at Scouts, and check things are being done safely and legally.
As a Trustee, you’ll be part of a dynamic team working together to make Scouts operate like a well-oiled machine. From managing money to checking meeting places are in tip-top condition. Trustees see the big picture, make decisions and work together.
We’d welcome anyone from all different backgrounds, experiences and generations.
- Professionals or community-minded individuals with skills in business, finance, leadership, HR, legal, or fundraising – you’ll put your valuable skills into practice and share your knowledge with your team
- People getting back into work or changing careers – you’ll gain transferable skills and experience for your next challenge
- Retirees wishing to keep themselves busy – you’ll share your life experience that’ll be most welcome and beneficial
- People looking to build their CVs – you’ll gain vital experience to make your job or university application shine
