There is nothing more important than the next generation, and it is crucial that we engage them in the political process for the good of the country. I enjoy nothing more than hearing from young people, and Eastwood Academy impressed upon us all that more could be done to accommodate the views of young people and neurodivergent pupils. They were delighted to win the day on a public vote, cast by everyone in the room.
Inspired by Sport and Resilience
More than 70 students joined me, including pupils from Chase High School, Eastwood Academy, Cecil Jones Academy, St Thomas More High School, The St Christopher School, Westcliff High School for Boys, and members of Southend’s Youth Council. They were keen to hear how I became an MP and what the role involves, while I was eager to learn what they needed to make their lives better.
The team from Southend United’s Community Foundation and members of the Youth Council helped me judge a “Dragon’s Den” style presentation from the schools on what is needed for the younger generation in Southend. Presentations included:
- Westcliff High School for Boys: “Improved Amenities for the Young People of Southend”
- Chase High School: “Supporting Small Businesses through Engaging Young People”
- St Thomas More: “Mental Health and Well-Being for Residents of Southend”
- Eastwood Academy: “Support for Neurodivergent Pupils”
Inspiration was also delivered by Alex Clark, Head of Coaching at Southend United Community Foundation, and Andy Edmunds, its Head of Education. They presented a motivating talk not only about the power of sport, but also the important challenge of tackling life with mental resilience.
It is hugely encouraging to hear the views of the younger generation so well expressed, giving us all positivity and hope for the future. These children will be making the decisions of the future, and judging by what we heard, I have every confidence in their ability.
