Forest Green 2–1 Southend United

Southend United slipped to their third league defeat on the road this season after Forest Green Rovers staged a late comeback to overturn a second-half opener from Slavi Spasov.

The Shrimpers looked on course to extend their unbeaten run when Spasov struck midway through the second half, but two quickfire goals from the hosts swung the contest in the closing stages.

Line-up and Build-Up

Kevin Maher made one change from last weekend’s impressive 3–0 win over Altrincham, bringing Ben Goodliffe back into the starting XI following his recovery from a calf problem. Harry Taylor missed out through suspension, Leon Parillon was sidelined with illness, and Keenan Appiah-Forson was unavailable due to injury. Young defender Julius Nwike was named among the substitutes after featuring for the U19s.

First Half

Both sides began brightly in an energetic opening. Sam Austin went close for Southend inside the first minute before Jayden Clarke answered with a wide effort for the hosts after connecting with a low Tom Knowles delivery.

Goodliffe produced an important block to take the power out of a Nick Haughton strike, allowing keeper Nick Hayes to gather comfortably. Hayes was called into action again on 20 minutes, pushing away another Haughton attempt as Forest Green began to press higher up the pitch.

The hosts carved out the best opportunity of the first half when Temi Babalola met a cross from close range, only to see his header rattle the crossbar. Further efforts from Knowles and Jili Buyabu kept Southend alert, but neither side could break the deadlock before the interval.

Half-Time: 0–0

Second Half

Southend started well after the restart and could have taken the lead when Slavi Spasov nodded a corner into the path of Callum Dallas, whose miscued strike let Forest Green off the hook. A better chance followed shortly after when Dallas forced Harry Isted into a low save at the near post.

The Shrimpers were forced into a change just before the hour when Dallas pulled up with a hamstring issue, with Jack Bridge entering the action on the right flank. That switch proved decisive when Bridge helped unlock the home defence in the 68th minute.

Bridge threaded a pass into Gus Scott-Morriss, making his 150th Southend appearance, and the wing-back fired a left-footed effort across goal. Spasov arrived at the far post to force the ball over the line, giving Southend a deserved lead.

Forest Green reacted quickly. Haughton squandered a golden opportunity moments after the opener, blazing over from close range, but the pressure soon told. Ten minutes after falling behind, the hosts levelled when a drifting cross was flicked on by Mendy and met by Harry Whitwell, who finished on the run at the back post.

Just two minutes later, Forest Green completed the turnaround. Kyle McAllister collected possession around 30 yards from goal and surprised Hayes with a low strike that found the bottom-left corner.

Southend introduced Tom Hopper and Josh Walker late on in search of an equaliser. Walker, returning from illness, almost created a final opening, but the hosts held firm to secure the points.

Full-Time: Forest Green Rovers 2–1 Southend United

League Position

The defeat leaves Southend seventh in the Enterprise National League table, two points ahead of Hartlepool and two behind Scunthorpe as the play-off race tightens.
