Hints and Ideas for Your Garden in November
As the days grow shorter and the chill of winter begins to bite, it’s time to give your garden some care and attention before the frost sets in. November is all about preparation—tidying, protecting, and planning ahead for a healthy and vibrant spring. Whether you’re working on your vegetable plot, adding colour to the garden, or caring for indoor plants, these seasonal tasks will keep your green spaces thriving through the colder months.
On the Plot
Now’s the ideal time to repot mint and move it indoors or to the greenhouse for fresh growth. Bring in sage too, ensuring you have herbs ready for Christmas. Start planting autumn fruits, onions and garlic for a strong start next year. Before frost arrives, clear shading paint from the greenhouse, plant winter veg like cabbage, sprouts, broccoli and kale, and give your shed and staging some TLC with a coat of preservative.
In the Garden
November’s perfect for planting hellebores (Christmas roses) and winter-flowering heathers for a splash of seasonal colour. A new range of roses is also in stock, ready for your borders. Protect tender plants like olives and bays with fleece, guard trees and shrubs from wildlife, and lift and store dahlias in dry moss peat or compost. Finally, tie in your climbers before the winter winds arrive.
By the Pond
As the temperature drops, reduce feeding your fish and switch to a wheatgerm-based food. Remove pumps and lights from the pond to prevent frost damage, and keep tidying to ensure the water stays clear and healthy throughout the winter.
About the House
Indoors, reduce watering your houseplants and move them to lighter positions during the day, away from direct heat sources. Pot up your amaryllis now to enjoy their festive blooms later on. Keep an eye out for our Christmas stock—it’s arriving very soon!
Family & Friends
Wild birds will soon need extra energy, so keep feeders topped with fat balls, peanuts, mealworms and other nourishing treats. Indoors, spoil your pets with our range of hays—“Friendly Redigrass” and “Verde” blends with chamomile, dandelion or wild rose are perfect for rabbits and guinea pigs. And for a festive touch, explore our new Christmas toys and treats for your furry friends, now in stock.
Tip
Christmas trees arrive at the end of November! Raise pots on feet and check drainage to prevent winter waterlogging.
