Hints and ideas for your Garden in September

September is a pivotal month in the gardening calendar, marking the transition from summer’s abundance to autumn’s preparation. With the changing seasons, there are plenty of tasks to keep you busy, from planting and pruning to planning for the cooler months ahead. Here’s a guide to help you make the most of your garden this September.

On the Plot

As the days grow shorter, it’s time to get your plot ready for the coming months. Begin by planting garlic directly into the ground—this hardy crop thrives in the cooler temperatures and will be ready for harvest next summer. While you’re at it, don’t forget to prune back your blackberry bushes. Proper pruning now will ensure a bountiful harvest next year.

This is also the perfect time to sow spring cabbage. Getting these seeds into the ground now means you’ll have a head start when the growing season begins in earnest next year. Additionally, consider planting seed potatoes for a special Christmas harvest. Imagine the delight of serving homegrown potatoes during the festive season!

As autumn leaves start to fall, it’s wise to think about composting. Consider purchasing a compost bin to manage the debris and create nutrient-rich compost for your garden.

In the Garden

If you’re planning to plant fruit trees or bushes this year, September is an ideal time to start preparing. The cooler weather is less stressful for new plants, allowing them to establish strong root systems before winter.

This month is also perfect for planting potted cyclamen and autumn bulbs, setting the stage for a beautiful spring display. While you’re planting, take the time to trim and tie in climbers, clear out tired summer bedding, and remove shading from glasshouses to let in more light.

As temperatures begin to drop and the rain becomes more frequent, it’s the right moment to plant your winter bedding. Pansies, in particular, are becoming available and will add a splash of color to your garden throughout the colder months. Additionally, September is a great time to sow a new lawn and divide herbaceous perennials to keep your garden thriving.

By the Pond

Your pond requires attention too, especially as leaf fall increases. If leaves are becoming excessive, cover the surface to prevent them from clogging up the water. It’s also important to stay on top of clearing blanketweed and duckweed to maintain a healthy pond environment.

Overgrown marginal plants can become unruly, so don’t hesitate to cut them back if they’re getting out of control. Lastly, keep an eye on your waterlilies, as they can be susceptible to fungal problems during this time of year.

About the House

Bring some festive cheer to your home by planting containers with amaryllis and hyacinth bulbs now. With proper care, these bulbs will bloom just in time for Christmas, adding vibrant colors and sweet fragrances to your holiday decor.

While you’re tending to indoor plants, be vigilant for pests like scale insects and woolly aphids, which can become problematic as the weather cools.

Gardening Tips

When planting cyclamen, getting the depth just right is crucial. Ensure you plant them at the same depth they were in their potting compost. Planting too deep can lead to a plant with mostly leaves, while planting too shallow might result in an abundance of flowers that only last for a short time. Striking the right balance is key to achieving healthy growth and long-lasting blooms.

Pick of the Month

Here are some standout plants and vegetables for September:

  • Perennials: Hesperantha (Syn. Schizostylis)
  • Climbers: Campsis (Trumpet Vine)
  • Shrubs: Pittosporum
  • Trees: Malus (Crab Apple)
  • Vegetable: Christmas New Potatoes

Don’t Forget

September also brings several important dates and events:

  • International Day of Charity: September 5th
  • International Rabbit Day: September 24th
  • Great British Beach Clean Week: September 20th-29th

As you go about your gardening tasks, remember to let vegetation die back to provide shelter for wildlife. Use bird boxes and offer high-energy food for birds and hedgehogs to support them through the coming months.
