From Canvey Island to Shoeburyness: The State of Our Bathing Waters

The Essex coastline between Canvey Island and Shoeburyness is an important recreational destination, attracting swimmers, families, and visitors throughout the summer. However, beneath the appeal of its beaches lies a more complex picture of water quality, with environmental pressures, storm development, overflows, and bacterial pollution continuing to influence the condition of local bathing waters.

The 2025 Classifications Show a Mixed Picture

Along the Southend coastline, Thorpe Bay and Shoebury East achieved Excellent status, demonstrating encouraging bathing performance. Meanwhile, Leigh Bell Wharf, Chalkwell, Westcliff Bay, Jubilee, Shoeburyness, and other nearby sites remain important areas for continued monitoring and improvement, with several classified as Good. Canvey Island Foreshore, newly designated for the 2026 bathing season, represents a particularly interesting opportunity to build a reliable monitoring record and establish a clearer understanding of local pollution pressures.

Water Quality Concerns at Leigh

Recent Environment Agency classifications highlight both encouraging results and opportunities for improvement, particularly for beaches aiming to achieve the prestigious Blue Flag award. Bathing water quality is assessed using concentrations of Escherichia coli (E. coli) and intestinal enterococci—bacteria that can indicate contamination from sewage or other faecal sources. Annual classifications are based on monitoring results collected over four bathing seasons, with sites graded Excellent, Good, Sufficient or Poor.

These classifications provide a useful overview of long-term water quality but do not guarantee that conditions are safe every day, as pollution can fluctuate considerably following heavy rainfall.

Leigh Bell Wharf deserves particular attention because of its location near Leigh Creek and Benfleet Creek, where drainage systems, storm overflows, and surface-water outfalls can influence water quality. Following heavy rainfall, overwhelmed drainage infrastructure may discharge contaminated water into the surrounding environment. Although infrastructure improvements and investigations have taken place over previous years, the site’s Good classification indicates there is still scope to strengthen environmental performance. Continued monitoring of E. coli and intestinal enterococci, particularly after rainfall, will be essential to understanding whether further improvements are needed.

Protecting Our Beaches for the Future

Similar concerns apply elsewhere along the coastline. Urban drainage and sewage infrastructure can affect bathing waters, while storm discharges create additional risks at certain locations. Shoeburyness, for example, has a storm discharge onto the beach. These features do not necessarily mean a beach is persistently polluted but underline the importance of monitoring individual samples alongside annual classifications. Visitors should also check current pollution warnings before swimming, especially after periods of heavy rain.

The Potential for Blue Flag Recognition

The prospect of Blue Flag recognition provides an additional incentive to improve beach management. Blue Flag is an international environmental award that considers more than bathing water quality alone. Applicants must also demonstrate effective environmental management, appropriate safety measures, suitable facilities, accessibility, and environmental education.

Based on their Excellent 2025 classifications, Three Shells, Thorpe Bay, and Shoebury East appear to offer the strongest starting points for further assessment. However, excellent water quality alone does not establish eligibility, and no award should be assumed without checking the complete criteria.

Beyond Clean Bathing Water

Shoebury East illustrates why a broader environmental approach matters. Despite its Excellent classification, litter was recorded during 91 per cent of monitoring visits between 2021 and 2024, according to available profile information. This highlights the distinction between clean bathing water and a well-managed beach environment. Addressing litter, improving visitor facilities, and maintaining effective environmental education could therefore be important alongside protecting water quality.

For Canvey Island Foreshore, the immediate priority is to establish a robust baseline of bacterial results and investigate potential drainage and pollution pathways. Across the wider coastline, local authorities, environmental regulators, and water companies should continue examining storm-overflow performance, pollution incidents, and long-term bacterial trends.

Protecting Our Coastal Waters

Overall, the coastline has genuine strengths, with several beaches achieving Excellent bathing water status. Sustaining these results while improving Good-rated sites will require consistent monitoring, effective pollution control, and better environmental management.

With continued investment and transparent reporting, the beaches between Canvey Island and Shoeburyness can strengthen public confidence, protect coastal ecosystems, and move closer to meeting the wider ambitions associated with Blue Flag recognition.
