Southend-on-Sea residents are being invited to come together this November to remember the sacrifices made by generations of servicemen and women, as the city prepares for its annual Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service.
The Worshipful the Mayor of Southend-on-Sea, Cllr Tony Cox, is encouraging residents, veterans, serving personnel, uniformed organisations and visitors to attend the commemorations on Sunday 8 November 2026.
The event will provide an opportunity for the community to reflect, pay tribute to those who lost their lives in the two World Wars and subsequent conflicts, and recognise the dedication of those who continue to serve.
Remembrance Sunday Parade and Service
The parade will assemble at Prittlewell Square from 10.15am before making its way along Clifftown Parade to the Southend Cenotaph at 10.45am.
The Service of Remembrance will begin at 11am, incorporating the national two-minute silence.
Wreaths will be laid by civic dignitaries, Armed Forces representatives, veterans, faith leaders and community organisations. Members of the public wishing to lay a wreath will also be invited to do so during the service.
Local veterans, serving personnel and uniformed organisations wishing to participate in the parade should register their interest with the Mayor’s Office by emailing mayorsoffice@southend.gov.uk.
A City United in Reflection
Cllr Tony Cox, Mayor of Southend-on-Sea, said: “Remembrance Sunday is one of the most important occasions in our city’s civic calendar. It provides an opportunity for us all to come together, reflect upon the sacrifices made by generations of servicemen and women, and honour those who gave their lives in the service of our country.
“I encourage all residents and visitors to join us at the Cenotaph as we remember the fallen, support our veterans, and pay tribute to those who continue to serve today.”
Cllr Daniel Cowan, Leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, highlighted the importance of the annual commemorations in bringing communities together.
He also reflected on last year’s Poppies on the Pier commemorations, which attracted international attention and demonstrated Southend’s enduring support for the Armed Forces community.
Armistice Day Commemorations
Remembrance events will continue on Wednesday 11 November, when the Mayor will lead a further two-minute silence at 11am on Southend High Street, adjacent to the Victoria Shopping Centre.
Those attending the Remembrance Sunday service should be aware that temporary road closures and parking restrictions will be in place around the Cenotaph.
As part of the commemorations, a Royal Artillery gun will also be positioned in Southend Cliff Gardens, opposite Wilson Road, with ceremonial gun salutes taking place at 11am and 11.02am.
