For some, spiders are merely small creatures hiding in corners, but for others like Lisa, they are a source of crippling fear!
When Lisa came to me a few weeks ago, her life had been turned upside down by her fear of spiders. Each night, she couldn’t rest until she performed an exhausting ritual, checking her bed, curtains, windows, ceiling, and furniture, just to make sure no spiders were lurking nearby.
When Fear Takes Over
Lisa shared how her body reacted the moment she saw a spider. Her hands would tremble, sweat dripped down her face, and her breathing became so rapid that she feared fainting. She was constantly on edge, and if someone else wasn’t there to remove the spider quickly, the fear would overwhelm her.
A Fear Passed Through Generations
Lisa’s fear wasn’t random. Her mother, too, had a deep-seated fear of spiders. From the time Lisa was two years old, she witnessed her mum jump onto the sofa at the mere sight of a spider, screaming for help. Over time, that behavior became imprinted on Lisa’s own reactions. It was a fear passed down like an heirloom – a legacy she now struggled to break.
The Breaking Point
The fear reached its peak one day after a shower. As Lisa wrapped herself in a towel, a large spider leaped onto her body. She screamed, shaking uncontrollably, desperate for someone to help. That single moment stayed with her, haunting her in nightmares and fueling her anxiety. From that point on, her nightly checks became obsessive. Without them, sleep was impossible.
Conquering Fear for her Daughter
As a new mum, she didn’t want her daughter to inherit the same fears she had. She knew she had to find a way to conquer her phobia, not just for herself, but for her baby girl. That’s why she reached out for therapy, determined to stop the cycle of fear and finally reclaim her peace of mind.
