Based at the Haven Community Hub in Hamlet Court Road, formerly the Havens Department store, Age Concern have certainly grown since the charity was founded 50 years ago in 1974.
Activities, Café, and Support
As well as the warm and welcoming, 65 seater café serving affordable meals for all, there is a packed timetable of activities suitable for all ages and all abilities, starting at just £3. There are fitness classes such as keep fit and line dancing, table tennis, falls prevention classes , an art group, a choir, a whist group and many more. Free IT support is on offer twice per week, as well as free advice and support for benefit claims and form filling.
Day Centre for Care
Located within the Hub is a Day Centre offering bespoke care for those living with neurological conditions such as Dementia, Parkinsons and Stroke. With activities based around Cognitive Stimulation Therapy, bodies and brains are kept busy all day long. Activities include gentle chair exercise, games, reminiscing, singing and arts and crafts plus visits from local primary school children, a baby sensory group , entertainers, therapy animals and drama students. The centre offers both full and half day sessions and everyone gets a free trial.
Fundraising Events and Opportunities
The charity puts on some fantastic fundraising events throughout the year, which provide a vital source of income. In 2024 there were quiz nights, fayres. afternoon teas, cocktail making evenings and a fashion show where staff and volunteers modelled clothing donated to our onsite charity shop.
