Southend United’s trip to Rochdale came to an early halt on Saturday afternoon after persistent heavy rain rendered the Crown Oil Arena pitch unplayable, leading the referee to abandon the fixture in the 77th minute. At the time, Southend trailed 2–1 despite having made a strong start.
The Shrimpers took the lead inside the opening 10 minutes through Oli Coker, who reacted quickly to finish in difficult conditions. But as the weather worsened, the surface deteriorated rapidly. Rochdale were able to turn the score around with goals from Ryan East and Tarryn Allarakhia, both heavily influenced by the increasingly waterlogged pitch.
Head coach Kevin Maher said afterwards that, while the decision was disappointing for everyone involved, it was ultimately inevitable.
He acknowledged the efforts of the home grounds team, who battled throughout the day to keep the match alive. However, Maher felt the call to abandon could have been made much earlier.
“You could see from the first half that the pitch was only going one way,” he said. “The rain was relentless, the ball wasn’t travelling properly, and once it got to 2–1 it became clear it wasn’t going to improve. At that point it stops being football.”
Maher added that both sides were placed in an impossible situation as the conditions dictated the match rather than the players’ quality or intentions.
“We started really brightly and scored a great goal,” he reflected. “Our structure was good, and we were controlling large spells. Then the weather took over and the goals we conceded came from moments created by the surface rather than mistakes.”
With the ball frequently stopping dead in puddles and players struggling to keep their footing, the official eventually had no choice but to suspend play before confirming that the match could not continue.
Maher also expressed gratitude to the travelling Southend supporters, many of whom made the long 270-mile journey to Greater Manchester only to see the afternoon cut short.
“Our fans were incredible again,” he said. “They travelled in huge numbers and were making their presence felt. It’s frustrating for them more than anyone, but calling it off was the right decision.”
There was at least one bright note for Southend: the appearance of returning striker Harry Cardwell, who rejoined the club on loan from Forest Green Rovers earlier in the week. Maher was pleased to give him immediate minutes.
“We know exactly what Harry brings. He led the line well, worked brilliantly with Slavi Spasov, and gave us a strong outlet up top. It was good to have him back out there.”
The club will await confirmation of a rearranged date for the fixture.
