York City and Southend United shared the points after an entertaining and hard-fought contest at the league leaders’ LNER Community Stadium, with the Shrimpers producing a determined display to extend their unbeaten run.
Southend made a bright start and were rewarded for a dominant first-half performance by taking the lead through Harry Cardwell. The striker rose well to meet a pinpoint cross from Gus Scott-Morriss, guiding a header into the bottom corner for his first league goal since returning to the club.
The visitors could easily have been further ahead before the break. Leon Parillon saw a long-range effort tipped onto the crossbar by York goalkeeper Harrison Male, before Andrew Dallas struck the post after following up another promising attack. York struggled to contain Southend’s movement and energy, particularly down the flanks, as the Shrimpers consistently found space in the final third.
There was a setback shortly after the opening goal, however, as Cardwell was forced off with an injury, bringing an early reshuffle to the Southend attack.
At half-time, Southend held a deserved 1–0 advantage.
York emerged with greater urgency after the interval and began to test Collin Andeng Ndi in the Southend goal, who was called into action to tip a dangerous free-kick behind early in the second half. Despite increased pressure from the hosts, Southend continued to pose a threat on the break, with Slavi Spasov and Oli Coker both forcing saves from Male.
As the match entered its closing stages, York pushed forward in search of an equaliser and eventually found it three minutes from time. A cross from the right was met by Ollie Pearce at the near post, and his quick turn and finish found the bottom corner to level the scores.
Southend almost snatched a late winner, with Joe Gubbins heading narrowly wide and Scott-Morriss firing across the face of goal. The hosts then applied sustained pressure during stoppage time, but Southend defended resolutely to secure a valuable point on the road.
The result extends Southend United’s unbeaten run to four matches in all competitions. Attention now turns to a return to Roots Hall, where Eastleigh are the visitors, before a demanding run of consecutive away fixtures gets underway.
