Leaders at Chase High School have taken “swift and well-considered” action to improve standards, according to Ofsted inspectors.

A monitoring visit to the school, in Westcliff, was carried out by a team of inspectors in April after it was placed into special measures earlier this year.

As a result, a report has been published stating: “The school has a clear, appropriate plan to ensure pupils are safe and to improve behaviour and attitudes, the quality of education and personal development.”

Inspectors saw how the school has provided extra training for staff to be able to spot the risks of sexual harassment; improved systems and established a better culture of safeguarding; made it easier for students to report concerns; given more curriculum time to personal, social and health education for older students; and identifies students’ SEND more accurately with clearer support plans in place.

The school was also praised with the report stating –

  • “pupils now feel safer in school”
  • “leaders have made progress to improve the school”
  • “the school is becoming a calmer and happier place to be, evident in the significant reduction in the number of pupils who are persistently absent”
  • “the arrangements for safeguarding are effective
  • “the school may appoint early careers teachers” – the school had been asked not to employ inexperienced teachers previously

The positive monitoring report comes as no surprise to headteacher Matt Suttenwood, who was certain if his school was visited just days after the previous inspection, it would result in praise for his team’s ongoing efforts.

He said: “I am pleased that Chase High School has been recognised by Ofsted as a safe place for pupils to attend, where staff are striving to ensure excellent outcomes for pupils.

“The Ofsted team that conducted this inspection were both human and professional, treating pupils and staff with kindness and respect.”

Ryan Duff, CEO of Discovery Educational Trust which is responsible for the school, said: “The Trust will continue to provide additional support to Chase High School for as long as required. The school has been recognised for the rapid improvements it has made, and I have no doubt this will continue.”
