A new initiative is being launched in Southend to tackle environmental crime across the city. The newly established EnviroCrime unit will focus on combating fly-tipping, dog fouling, and littering, as well as other environmental offences.
What Is the EnviroCrime Unit?
The EnviroCrime unit, created in partnership with South Essex Property Services, is set to go live later this month. The team will focus on key environmental issues, including:
- BBQs on beaches
- Littering
- Dog fouling
- Graffiti
- Flyposting
- Fly-tipping
Residents and businesses who violate environmental laws may face Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs), as part of the council’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner and more attractive environment for everyone.
Targeting Problem Areas
Initially, the team will concentrate on problem areas and hotspots, where waste-related offences are more common. While the team can’t resolve every issue immediately, their presence is expected to make a significant difference in tackling these persistent problems.
Statement from Cllr Lydia Hyde
Cllr Lydia Hyde, the Cabinet Member for Climate, Environment, and Waste, expressed her support for the new enforcement service:
“This new service demonstrates our administration’s commitment to tackling environmental crime in Southend. We are taking a firm stance against those who fail to dispose of waste responsibly, as their actions have a lasting negative impact on our communities, businesses, and the environment.”
Cllr Hyde further explained the importance of addressing current issues in specific areas:
“By initially focusing on hotspots, we will actively address issues like fly-tipping, littering, and graffiti. We will also be ensuring that businesses have proper waste management arrangements in place, holding them accountable for their waste disposal.”
Raising Awareness and Encouraging Responsible Waste Management
The goal isn’t just to penalise offenders but also to raise awareness and promote responsible waste management. The unit aims to increase its visibility, ultimately fostering a cleaner, more welcoming environment that benefits local residents, visitors, and businesses.
