A firefighter from Waltham Abbey has been recognised at the Epping Forest District Council Civic Awards 2026 after transforming profound personal loss into a powerful campaign to save lives.
Nick Walton, based at Waltham Abbey Fire Station, received a Community Service Medal at the awards ceremony, which took place at the Delta by Marriott Hotel in Waltham Abbey on Friday 13 March.
The event celebrated Epping Forest’s unsung heroes and recognised individuals who tirelessly support their communities, make a difference and inspire others to do the same.
Nick was honoured for his extraordinary dedication to raising awareness of cardiac arrest response and improving access to life-saving equipment across Essex.

In August 2024, Nick’s fiancée, Nicola, tragically died following an out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrest. Just eight weeks later, Nick himself suffered a cardiac arrest – but thanks to rapid intervention, he survived.
Since then, he has committed himself to ensuring more people have the knowledge and tools to act quickly in similar situations.
Nick has been actively educating communities on how to perform CPR, emphasising the critical importance of early intervention, and highlighting how access to defibrillators can dramatically improve survival rates.
In addition to his outreach work, Nick has personally funded the purchase and installation of 24 defibrillators outside fire stations across Essex.
Each device has been dedicated to Nicola’s memory, creating a lasting legacy that continues to save lives.
Speaking about his award, Nick Walton said:
“Losing Nicola changed my life forever.
“Surviving a cardiac arrest myself just weeks later brought home just how critical those first few minutes are.
“I’m determined to help more people feel confident to step in, start CPR and use a defibrillator – because that can make all the difference. If sharing our story helps even one person survive, then it’s worth everything.
“These defibrillators are for Nicola – her legacy is helping others get a second chance.”
Station Manager Mat Bannon, praised Nick’s remarkable resilience and commitment, adding:
“Nick has shown incredible strength in the face of unimaginable loss.
“What he has achieved since then is nothing short of inspiring. His determination to educate others and improve access to defibrillators is already making a real difference in our communities.
“He embodies the very best of the fire service and this recognition is richly deserved.”
The Epping Forest District Council Civic Awards celebrate individuals and groups from across the district who go above and beyond to support their communities.
Among this year’s winners, Susan Smith received the Citizen of the Year Award, recognising her outstanding contribution to community life in Waltham Abbey.
Sue has become a well-known and trusted face locally, supporting residents through her dedication, kindness and tireless efforts.
She works with children of all ages and abilities and volunteers as a Community Champion, running a community café, organising litter picks and leading projects that tackle isolation.
A key member of the Waltham Abbey Town Twinning Association, Sue has even taught herself German to act as a translator during visits.
She has also established community coffee mornings at Waltham Abbey Fire Station, which have helped inspire a community garden project in the station grounds – further strengthening ties between the fire service and the local community.

“Well done to Nick and Sue for their dedication and kindness.”
Councillor Louise Mead, Chairman of Epping Forest District Council, added:
“This year has been one of both challenge and triumph for our district.
“We have seen neighbours step in when times were tough.
“We have seen volunteers give their time, energy and hearts without ever expecting recognition and we have seen young people lead with creativity and courage and long-standing community champions continue to inspire us all.
“Tonight we shine a light on them.”
