The spirit of community and determination was on full display as Hawkwell hosted its very first recorded marathon and fun run/walk, an unforgettable event that saw residents of all ages come together in support of a shared cause.
The weather held up for most of the day, and the atmosphere was electric, with cheers echoing through the lanes as runners and walkers completed the scenic route. Local residents lined sections of the course to offer encouragement, while delicious homemade cakes and refreshments awaited participants at the finish line.

It was particularly inspiring to see young runners taking part, including Annie Mason, 14, who lives in Mount Bovers Lane, directly opposite the site of the proposed development of 350 homes. Her participation highlighted the strong local connection to the event’s cause.
Event organiser Julie Gooding said:
“The turnout and enthusiasm have been amazing. This was more than just a run, it was a celebration of our community coming together for a shared cause. We’re so grateful to everyone who took part, donated refreshments, or supported in any way.”
The marathon not only marked a milestone for Hawkwell but also raised vital funds for the ‘Save Mount Bovers’ campaign, which is standing up for local recreational and environmental Green Belt land. The event demonstrated how far residents are willing to go to protect their open spaces, in this case, quite literally going the extra mile.
From the tireless volunteers and bakers to the organisers and donors, the event showcased the best of local spirit and solidarity.
Funds raised from the event will go towards supporting our campaign which includes standing up for our local recreational and environmental Green Belt under the Save Mount Bovers campaign.
