As winter pressures continue across local hospitals, the NHS is reminding residents that there are several services available to help them get the care they need quickly and safely.
Emergency departments remain open for life-threatening conditions, while many people can be treated sooner through alternatives such as NHS 111, pharmacies and GP services, which are open as usual after the holiday period.
Dr Matt Sweeting, Executive Medical Director for NHS Mid and South Essex, said:
“Our local healthcare services are extremely busy caring for some very sick patients.
“We have a range of services open today and over the weekend to help residents access non-emergency care, including GPs, pharmacies, NHS 111, and Orsett Hospital’s Minor Injuries unit. Please use the right service for your needs so we can keep emergency care available for those who need help the most.”
Pharmacies are open, offering patients access to convenient advice and treatment – including prescription-only medicines – for a range of common conditions, including sore throats, sinusitis and earache. To find your nearest pharmacy and check what services they offer, visit Find a pharmacy – NHS.
GP practices are open as usual. Patients should contact their GP practice in the usual way for non-urgent medical needs – including online, by phone, or visiting the practice.
People who need urgent dental care can for conditions like severe toothache, severe bleeding from the gums, and broken or knocked out teeth, can access support by calling NHS111, which can book urgent dental appointments directly with local dental practices.
A minor injuries unit is available at Orsett Hospital providing nurse-led services for people who have a range of minor injuries including head and neck injuries, burns and scalds, sprains and facial injuries.
For all urgent but non-emergency health advice, use 111.nhs.uk or call 111. Calls to 999 and A&E should be used in the event of life or limb threatening emergencies.
Residents who are most at risk of getting very ill with flu are also being urged to come forward for their flu vaccinations if they haven’t already been vaccinated. Anyone unsure about whether they qualify can check the NHS website or speak to their GP, pharmacy, or health visitor.
