New breakfast clubs for children are opening in Southend West and Leigh to give our children the best possible start in life.
We all know the benefits of making sure every child starts the school day ready to learn.
School and Heycroft Primary School in my constituency have been selected to roll out the free breakfast clubs this month, as part of the first tranche of a new government initiative.
It is part of Labour’s national roll out that will see all schools enjoying the benefits of breakfast clubs in the future and could save families up to £450 a year.
Breakfast Clubs’ Framework
The focus for a nationwide rollout of breakfast clubs is to improve our children’s readiness to learn, increasing their concentration, wellbeing and behaviour.
Assessments show that pupils in the breakfast clubs made two additional months of progress in KS1 Maths, Reading, and Writing.
Schools with breakfast clubs also see improvements in pupil behaviour and attendance.
They will allow more time to provide additional support to pupils too, ranging from tuition time with teaching assistants or teachers, to additional support from pastoral staff, allowing for greater socialisation.

With free breakfast clubs we are cutting the cost of sending children to school, making life easier for families.
I believe this is a huge plus for children, their families and the schools, thanks to Labour’s Plan for Change to make breakfast clubs universal in the future.
I am absolutely delighted that schools in Southend West and Leigh will be some of the first schools to benefit from Labour’s new free breakfast clubs and I cannot wait to see them opening very soon.
