We have announced a period of national renewal and in the spending review we have set out how to achieve it, with extra money for transport, health and schools for Southend West and Leigh.
Labour’s first spending review, which outlines departmental budgets for the rest of this parliament, has invested in the public services and infrastructure that are most important to our residents.
Southend West and Leigh is benefitting from investment in the NHS that is already bringing down waiting lists at Southend Hospital. Our schools and GP surgeries will gain capital investment to fix their buildings and there will be more funding for our police force.
Government Funding for Southend
- Bus fares frozen at £3
- £12.4 million for local transport
- £6m for building repairs at Mid and South Essex NHS Trust including Southend Hospital
- £800,000 investment in sport
- Four local GP Surgeries buildings’ maintenance
- New second LINAC radiotherapy machine
- Crumbling classrooms in four local schools
- Free school meals for up to 4,000 more children in our constituency
- New free breakfast clubs for schoolchildren
A 2.3% increase per year in real terms will support frontline policing to make the streets of Southend safer.
Health services are to receive more than any other area. A 3% increase will help waiting lists coming down, so you and your family can get the treatment you need, as well as helping the longer-term reform of our NHS.
Boost for Schools and Housing
Investment in the School Rebuilding Programme of around £2.4 billion per year will also benefit buildings maintenance in at least four schools here and the biggest boost to investment in social and affordable housing in a generation will provide homes for future.
In addition to the bus fare cap, the frozen prescription charges and the reduced energy cap, wages have gone up more in the first 10 months of this Labour government than in the last 10 years under the Tories and we’ve seen four interest cuts too in the last 12 months.
This Spending Review is about investing in Britain’s renewal – in your security, health, economy and services – so you and your family are better off.
