The Spotlight Radiotherapy Appeal, launched in February 2023 to support Southend Hospital’s Radiotherapy department, has not only reached but exceeded its initial £600,000 target ahead of schedule, thanks to overwhelming community support and a generous £100,000 legacy donation.
Increased Target Improves Treatment
The appeal funds the purchase of Surface Guided Radiation Therapy (SGRT) devices, which will reduce treatment times and improve patient comfort.
Following this success, the Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation has pledged to raise an additional £275,000, increasing the total appeal target to £875,000.
The extra funds will enable:
- The purchase of another SGRT attachment.
- Complementary immobilisation devices.
- Enhancements to the Radiotherapy Department’s environment.
Emma Wynne-Morgan, Chair of the foundation, said:
“The board of trustees and I are incredibly grateful for the generous bequest we have received in support of the appeal. This unexpected and truly life-changing sum has allowed us to extend our support for the Radiotherapy team. By summer 2025, cutting-edge SGRT will be available to all patients, further improving the journey for those undergoing cancer treatment. We are so thankful for everyone’s donation, big or small.”
Community Unites for Cancer Care
The Essex community has rallied behind the appeal, with:
- Essex Freemasons donating over £77,000.
- Rotary Groups contributing £32,500.
- Corporate partners like New Leaf Distribution in Rayleigh giving £60,000.
Adventure Island and Stockvale Group have also championed the appeal through various events.
Dr. Krishnaswamy Madhavan, Medical Director at the Essex Cancer Centre, said:
“On behalf of all patients undergoing cancer treatment, thank you. This technology is transforming how we deliver radiotherapy and takes us closer to becoming a Cancer Centre of Excellence for Essex.”
Legacy Fund Supports Innovation
Although the appeal closes this summer, the Spotlight Radiotherapy Fund will remain open to support future advancements for the Radiotherapy Department, ensuring lasting benefits for patients.
