On Tuesday evening, Thorpe Bay Golf Club played host to a celebration event marking the extraordinary success of Southend’s Hospital Charitable Foundations, Spotlight Appeal, a community-driven fundraising campaign that has now exceeded its target by raising an astonishing £920,000 for Southend Hospital’s radiotherapy department.
Launched in February 2023, the Appeal was chaired by Emma Wynne-Morgan who, alongside a dedicated volunteer committee, has spearheaded the initiative to bring the latest in Surface Guided Radiotherapy (SGRT) technology to Southend. This equipment will provide cancer patients with more precise radiation treatment, and, importantly, it eliminates the need for permanent tattoos traditionally used to guide therapy.
Speaking at the event, Wynne-Morgan said:
“We launched the Spotlight Appeal with a bold vision, and thanks to the phenomenal generosity of local businesses, clubs, and individuals, we’ve not only achieved our goal, but we’ve also surpassed it. This equipment will enhance patient care and place Southend firmly among the best-equipped cancer centres in the country.”
The event was attended by supporters, sponsors, volunteers and members of the fundraising committee, who have worked tirelessly since the Spotlight Appeal was launched, to engage the community and raise awareness for the Appeal. A commemorative photo was taken on the night featuring the committee and Chair.
This milestone moment marks the end of the fundraising campaign, but the impact it will have on local cancer patients is just beginning.
