Every year, thousands of people across the UK experience domestic abuse, a crime that can leave lasting physical, emotional, and psychological scars. It can happen to anyone, regardless of age, background, gender, or circumstance, and often goes unseen by friends, family, and the wider community.
Here in Southend, Safe Steps provides vital support for individuals and families living with the impact of abuse. From emergency refuge spaces to practical advice, recovery programmes, and long-term emotional support, their work helps people rebuild their lives and find hope for the future.
SOS Combatives Fundraising Workshop
This September, SOS Combatives, a Southend-based self-protection group, will be holding a special fundraising workshop, with 100% of proceeds donated to Safe Steps.

The event is designed to help attendees build confidence, awareness, and practical tools for everyday safety. Importantly, this is an independent fundraising initiative, and while Safe Steps is honoured to benefit from the funds raised, the charity does not endorse self-defence as a response to domestic abuse, as retaliating with force can often escalate dangerous situations.
By attending, participants will be supporting Safe Steps’ essential ongoing work across Southend and Essex, ensuring no one has to face abuse alone.
