Focal Point Gallery is thrilled to announce the launch of ‘S for Southend 2025’, a vibrant exhibition celebrating the creative spirit of Southend’s community. Running from 23 January to 8 March 2025, this annual showcase reflects the connections and collaborations formed through the gallery’s 2024 Learning Programme. From children to elders, this event highlights the transformative power of art to inspire and bring people together.
A Glimpse Inside the Exhibition
Gallery 1: A Home of Creativity
Step into a space reimagined as a house, featuring works by the Contemporary Elders, a group of creatives aged 60 and over. Each room—from the living room to the kitchen—offers an intimate glimpse into the connections built within this community. Audience members are invited to join the experience by answering the question: “What is your safe space?” Leave your thoughts using the interactive telephone provided.
Gallery 2: Perspectives and Stories
- Through the Lens Project: In collaboration with South Essex Homes, this initiative captures extraordinary moments from everyday life through the eyes of local residents. It challenges stereotypes and showcases the beauty of social housing communities.
- SAVS Portrait Series: Spotlighting Southend’s grassroots charities, this series celebrates the incredible individuals who make a difference in their community. Through stunning portraits, visitors will discover the remarkable stories of these local heroes.
- Gather around the gallery’s campfire for reflection, conversation, and a shared sense of belonging.
Special Feature: Relay on the Big Screen Southend
Back for its third year, Relay presents a dynamic video programme featuring Southend-based creatives Elle Godfree, Cerys Hogg, and Dorothy Turner. This evolving showcase grows as each artist nominates another to participate, creating a chain of inspiration.
