It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Councillor Derek Jarvis, a devoted representative of West Shoebury for an incredible 23 years. Born in May 1939, Derek passed away last night, leaving behind a profound legacy of service, compassion, and community spirit. Our thoughts and condolences go out to his beloved wife Val, as well as his family and friends during this difficult time.
Throughout his tenure, Derek was a staunch advocate for the arts, culture, and leisure in Southend. As Cabinet Member for Arts, Culture & Leisure, he passionately championed initiatives that brought joy and enrichment to the community. His unwavering support extended to the Jazz Club, Southend United, and the Pier Museum, institutions that benefitted greatly from his dedication and love for the area.
Recently, Derek was honoured as an Honorary Alderman at the Southend Council Chamber. The heartfelt tributes from councillors across all parties underscored the respect and admiration he garnered throughout his career. His contributions extended far beyond his official duties, as he sat on numerous committees, including the Shoebury Coastal Community Team and the Cart & Wagon Shed.
Derek served as Southend’s Mayor in 2018, a role in which he made an indelible mark on the community. Among his many achievements, he supported a school children’s painting competition at the C2C Shoebury Station. Derek and his wife Val presented certificates to the three winners, whose framed paintings now grace the station’s reception.
One of Derek’s most transformative contributions was his pivotal role in securing funding for the redevelopment of Shoebury Common North. Once an under-utilised space, this area is now a vibrant hub for families, thanks to the playground, picnic spots, fitness suite, and a solar-powered talking bench aimed at tackling loneliness and mental health challenges. Local children now play there from morning until dusk, and families gather for games, football, and kite flying, creating a thriving community space.
Derek’s efforts touched countless lives, and his absence will be deeply felt. To commemorate his extraordinary contributions, we would love to see a Memorial Tree planted in his honour, accompanied by a plaque. Such a tribute would serve as a lasting reminder of a man who was truly dedicated to Shoebury and its people.
Derek Jarvis was not just a councillor; he was a Shoebury man through and through, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May he now rest in peace.
