Diane M. Hinds ‘The Island Britain Bought’
The Forum, Southend

About the event
Author Diane M. Hinds will explore her debut historical novel, Conquerabia: The Struggle for Identity, in an event titled The Island Britain Bought. The book follows Trinidad’s history from Christopher Columbus’s arrival in 1498, through Spanish colonisation, to the island’s transfer to Britain.
Drawing on the novel’s different viewpoints, Diane will consider the experiences of governors, enslaved people, Indigenous communities and free citizens. The discussion examines the effects of cultural collision, as well as questions of identity and resilience. There will also be an opportunity to put questions to the author and have books signed.
Tickets are free. To reserve a place, visit the Southend Libraries Eventbrite booking page.
