⚓ Ahoy there! One of Southend’s most spectacular nautical traditions returns — the Southend Barge Match 2025 will set sail on Saturday 26 July, bringing the beauty and drama of traditional Thames sailing barges to our coastline. 🏆🌊
Organised by the Thorpe Bay Yacht Club, this beloved annual event draws in crowds to witness these majestic vessels compete in a thrilling inshore race. This year’s race is scheduled to start at approximately 12:30 pm, with the course running off Jubilee Beach — weather permitting — so there will be plenty of fantastic viewing spots along the seafront.
Expect to see the graceful barges in all their glory, with crews battling for line honours and trophies. Whether you’re a sailing enthusiast, a photography lover, or simply fancy a great day by the sea, this is an unmissable summer highlight. 📸⚓
👉 Top tip: Arrive early to get the best views! High water is expected at 2:30 pm, which means prime sailing action will be in full swing early afternoon.
🛥️ Barge arrivals are expected the day before or early on race morning, so you may even catch a glimpse of them preparing in the bay.
🏅 After the thrills on the water, join in the fun on dry land — there will be an evening prizegiving at Thorpe Bay Yacht Club, celebrating the day’s champions.
