In the Glasshouse
FEED & DEADHEAD! Continue to plant your bedding plants. Prune rambling roses once they have finished flowering. Spray roses with ‘Rose Clear’ on a regular basis to control aphids and fungus. Prune lupins to encourage more flowers. Refresh short-lived annual plants in your hanging baskets and tubs. Prune wisterias. Continue to tie in and train new growth on climbing plants.
On the Plot
Plant herbs, leek, and winter brassicas. Continue to sow successions of carrots, radishes, spring onions, and beetroot. This is also the time for your final batch of French beans. Check runner beans for black fly and twist them in when required. Feed and water tomatoes regularly; irregular watering can cause splitting. Additionally, check for cabbage white butterfly eggs under brassica leaves or in the shade of other leaves, and squash any that you find.
Down the garden
This is the perfect time to finalise your summer bedding with lobelias, petunias, and marigolds. Sow tender flowers such as cosmos, sunflowers, and zinnias directly outdoors. Shade your greenhouse with either netting or white glass shade. Plant out cannas and lily bulbs, and ensure you are liquid feeding summer bedding, especially hanging baskets and planted containers. Plant autumn-flowering anemones and adequately support taller perennials with frames, canes, and stakes. Deadhead roses regularly and control slugs with a proprietary slug deterrent.
By the Pond
Cut back pond plants if they have finished flowering or are out of control. Ensure that you have some splashing water in your pond to increase oxygen. Top up ponds and water features, ensuring that you use de-chlorinator.
About the House
Feed your houseplants regularly. Re-check sun exposure and move plants out of direct sunlight if necessary. Holiday indoor plant watering systems are available.
