Southend United extended their unbeaten start to the season with a hard-fought 1-0 win away at Truro City, thanks to a decisive second-half goal from Sam Austin.
The midfielder, who had already opened his account for the campaign at Gateshead earlier in the month, struck once more on the road to deliver all three points for the Blues.
A Quiet First Half
The match began with both sides trading early opportunities. Gus Scott-Morriss came closest for Southend inside five minutes, his powerful header from an Oli Coker corner cleared off the line by Zac Bell. At the other end, Yassine En-Neyah found space after latching onto Lirak Hasani’s pass, but his effort flashed wide across goal.
From there, chances were few and far between. Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain tried to spark something for Truro with a long throw late in the half, but goalkeeper Collin Andeng Ndi gathered safely to ensure the sides went in level at the interval.
Austin Breaks the Deadlock
The second half came to life around the hour mark. Tom Hopper thought he had put Southend in front with a superb header from Scott-Morriss’ cross, only for the assistant’s flag to rule him offside.
The disappointment was short-lived, though. Just a minute later, Andrew Dallas combined with Scott-Morriss, whose shot deflected into a crowded six-yard box. Amid the scramble, Austin reacted quickest, firing high into the net to give the visitors a deserved lead.
Southend pressed to extend their advantage, with Scott-Morriss forcing Dan Lavercombe into a smart save from a free kick and Ben Goodliffe’s header cleared off the line. Truro almost snatched an equaliser late on when Jake Taylor’s corner clipped the crossbar, but the Shrimpers held firm.

The victory keeps Southend’s unbeaten run intact and lifts them up to third place in the National League table. Attention now turns to a swift turnaround, with Hartlepool United – currently sitting second – visiting Roots Hall on Bank Holiday Monday.
