Sir Tim Rice, the legendary lyricist behind some of the most iconic musicals of all time, is hitting the road once again for his 2025 UK theatre tour, My Life in Musicals – I Know Him So Well. This show, which will be stopping at the Southend Cliffs Pavilion in May 2025, offers audiences a rare chance to hear firsthand the stories behind his greatest hits.
Rice’s career spans decades, collaborating with some of the biggest names in music and theatre, including Andrew Lloyd Webber, Elton John, Alan Menken, and Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA fame. His ability to craft lyrics that not only complement melodies but also tell compelling stories has solidified his status as one of the greatest lyricists in musical history.
The tour initially began as a small venture, with trial performances in 2023. The overwhelmingly positive response led to a full-scale tour in 2024, which proved so popular that it has now been extended into 2025. Rice himself admits that taking the show on the road is something of an adventure—this time covering 38 dates across the UK and Ireland, including a highly anticipated stop at the Southend Cliffs Pavilion in May.
The format of My Life in Musicals is refreshingly informal, resembling a fireside chat rather than a structured performance. Accompanied by a live band and a quartet of exceptional singers, Rice shares the origins of his most famous songs, peppering his stories with humor, nostalgia, and personal anecdotes. While he does sing on occasion, he admits that audiences are probably relieved that the heavy lifting is done by his talented vocalists.
One of the more humorous elements of the show involves Rice revisiting an early, failed attempt at songwriting. Before I Don’t Know How to Love Him became the beloved ballad from Jesus Christ Superstar, it was an ill-fated tune called Kansas Morning, with lyrics Rice describes as dreadful. He performs it in the show to demonstrate just how crucial good lyrics are to a great melody.
Audience participation plays a key role, particularly during the rousing finale when everyone joins in for Any Dream Will Do. Beyond the stage, Rice enjoys interacting with fans and often reconnects with old acquaintances who bring long-forgotten memorabilia from his early career.
