On the Plot
February is perfect for getting your garden ready for the season ahead:
- Buy seed potatoes and start chitting them before planting.
- For those with a heated glasshouse, sow chillies and early tomatoes to get ahead.
- Plant fruit trees and soft fruits like raspberries, blueberries, and currants to ensure a bountiful harvest later.
- Spring clean your greenhouse by clearing debris and preparing it for the busy months ahead.
In the Garden
As winter gives way to spring, there’s plenty to tackle in the garden:
- Prune evergreen shrubs, except those with red new shoots like Photinia (wait until late March for these).
- Prune roses, wisteria, and clematis to promote healthy growth and vibrant blooms.
- Start sweet peas indoors for an early burst of fragrance and colour.
- Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as lilies and nerines to create a stunning display later in the year.
- Clear dead leaves and stalks from perennials and give your lawn its first cut to encourage fresh growth.
- Check tree ties and stakes, securing climbers and young trees.
- Trim winter-flowering heathers to keep them compact and prevent legginess.
By the Pond
Give your pond some care this month:
- Clean the filters and service the pumps to ensure they run efficiently.
- Remove dead leaves and plants from the water to prevent decay and preserve water quality.
- Observe your fish, checking their health and addressing any issues promptly.
About the House
Take care of your indoor plants:
- Repot houseplants to provide fresh soil and extra space, promoting healthy growth.
- Repot citrus trees if you have them, as this is an ideal moment to do so.
- For amaryllis, remove faded flowers by deadheading to keep plants neat and encourage future blooms.
