Southend-on-Sea City Council is taking a stand against violence towards women and girls by supporting White Ribbon Day on Monday, 25 November 2024, and participating in the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence until 10 December.
This year’s White Ribbon Day theme, “It Starts With Men”, emphasizes the vital role men and boys play in challenging harmful behaviors and attitudes that perpetuate gender-based violence.
White Ribbon Accreditation
Last week, the council proudly achieved White Ribbon Accreditation, a milestone that underscores its commitment to fostering respect, equality, and cultural change. Initiatives already in place include:
- Launching a Domestic Abuse Policy for staff.
- Appointing White Ribbon Ambassadors and Champions to raise awareness and encourage positive behavior across the council and the wider community.
How to Get Involved
Council staff and members of the public are invited to show their support by visiting the White Ribbon stand on Monday, 25 November, from 8:30 am to 2:00 pm near the Courtyard Café at the Civic Centre. Resources about becoming a White Ribbon Ambassador or Champion will also be available.
Activities During the 16 Days of Activism
A variety of events and initiatives will be held to raise awareness and promote action against gender-based violence:
- Frontline Practitioner Sessions
Short 20-minute sessions will share best practices for addressing gender-based violence. - Personal Stories and Practical Advice
Follow the council’s LinkedIn page for blogs and reflections from White Ribbon Ambassadors, Champions, and council leader Cllr Daniel Cowan, sharing lived experiences and inspiring change. - Community Engagement Events
- ‘Let’s Talk VAWG’ events and Safe Space initiatives hosted by community safety teams, the police, and partner organizations.
- Public engagement sessions by Transport Safety Officers at Southend Victoria Train Station on Monday, 25 November, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
Voices for Change
Cllr Daniel Cowan, Leader of the Council, shared his perspective:
“Ending violence against women and girls requires collective action and a commitment to respect and equality. I know from bitter experience how essential this work is, which is why I moved the motion that started this process when I first became a councillor in 2019. Men have a critical role to play as allies, so I urge everyone to make the White Ribbon Promise: to never use, excuse, or remain silent about male violence against women. Together, we can make Southend a safer place for all.”
Colin Ansell, Chief Executive of the Council, added:
“Achieving White Ribbon Accreditation reflects our commitment to building a safe, inclusive workplace and driving meaningful change in our community. By empowering our staff and collaborating with partners, we aim to lead by example in preventing violence and supporting those affected.”
