Install shading or apply glasshouse shading paint to protect your plants from the strong summer sun.
On the Plot
June is the time to finish planting your tender vegetables, such as peppers, courgettes, and tomatoes. Feed pumpkins and courgettes with a proprietary liquid feed, and don’t forget to liquid feed tomatoes and strawberries with a proprietary tomato feed. Plant late-flowering broccoli, and sow successions of beetroot, pak choi, radishes, and lettuce. Sweetcorn should be planted in square groups of nine plants, as they are wind-pollinated and need to be in groups for effective pollination. Once early potatoes have finished flowering, you can start lifting them. Be vigilant about aphids, as they become a problem this time of year, and spray regularly to keep them under control.
Down the garden
This is the perfect time to finalise your summer bedding with lobelias, petunias, and marigolds. Sow tender flowers such as cosmos, sunflowers, and zinnias directly outdoors. Shade your greenhouse with either netting or white glass shade. Plant out cannas and lily bulbs, and ensure you are liquid feeding summer bedding, especially hanging baskets and planted containers. Plant autumn-flowering anemones and adequately support taller perennials with frames, canes, and stakes. Deadhead roses regularly and control slugs with a proprietary slug deterrent.
By the Pond
Thin out aquatic plants to keep your pond healthy. Place barley straw in both your pond filter and main pond to help prevent algae growth. We have a wide range of fish food in stock to keep your aquatic pets well-fed.
About the House
As the weather gets warmer, some conservatory plants can be moved outside for the summer. Keep an eye out for bugs on your houseplants and deal with any infestations promptly.
