Southend-on-Sea City Council’s Community Safety Unit (CSU) has been celebrated for its outstanding work in community safety at the Southend Community Safety Awards, part of the annual Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) event held at Essex Police Headquarters.
The prestigious event, which highlights the achievements of CSAS-accredited organisations across Essex, saw Southend CSU recognised in multiple categories. The scheme grants non-police staff specific police powers to address community safety concerns, such as issuing fixed penalty notices for littering and tackling anti-social behaviour. Southend’s CSU also plays a vital role in confiscating alcohol and tobacco from young people under the CSAS framework.
Southend CSU was proud to be named Organisation of the Year at the Southend Community Safety Awards, taking home a beautifully designed glass plaque and shield to commemorate their accomplishment.
Additionally, the council received a Long Service Award for over 10 years of CSAS accreditation, showcasing the dedication and long-standing commitment of the CSU to ensuring the safety of the local community.
Though narrowly missing out on Team of the Year and Accredited Person of the Year—where Daniel DeBond, Community Safety Manager, was a nominee—Southend CSU was proud to be runners-up in both categories, receiving certificates and Essex Police challenge coins as marks of distinction.
Cllr Martin Terry, Cabinet Member for Community Safety, said: “Receiving the Organisation of the Year award and long service recognition at the Southend Community Safety Awards reflects the hard work and commitment of our CSU. Their efforts ensure that Southend remains a safe place for residents, businesses, and visitors alike. I’m incredibly proud of the entire team.”
Simon Ford, Head of Community Safety, added: “These awards represent the strength of our partnership with Essex Police and the positive impact our work has across the community. It’s great to see our efforts recognised by colleagues across the county.”
The Southend Community Safety Awards provide an important platform for accredited organisations to share best practices and continue their essential work to enhance safety throughout Essex.
