A vibrant and heartwarming event took place last week on Southend Pier, celebrating individuals with learning disabilities from across the city.
Held on Thursday, September 12, the event was organised by Project 49 and the Southend Learning Disabilities User Voice Group, attracting around 200 attendees. Among them were Southend’s Mayor and Mayoress, council executives, individuals with learning disabilities, and their carers.
Event Highlights:
- The premiere of a film about the history of Southend Pier, created by the LD digital arts group under Project 49, was one of the main highlights. The film showcased the group’s creativity and talent, offering a unique perspective on the iconic pier.
- The Southend Learning Disabilities User Voice Group led an interactive session encouraging more individuals with learning disabilities to join. This session focused on promoting the group’s mission to be a voice for those with learning disabilities, ensuring services in the city are inclusive and co-created.
Councillor Maxine Sadza, cabinet member for social care and healthier communities, commented:
