Southend-on-Sea City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining accessible and high-quality library services across the city following a Cabinet meeting on 15 June, where members agreed the next steps for Southchurch Library.
The council says no decision has been made to close library services in the Southchurch area and has stressed that any future plans will ensure local residents continue to have access to library provision.
Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Kevin Robinson, Cabinet Member for Planning, Property and Governance, said Southchurch Library had served the community for many years but that the building itself was now facing significant challenges.
He explained that a recent condition survey found the property had reached the end of its useful life and would require substantial investment. Even with major repairs, the building would not provide a sustainable long-term solution for library services.
Councillor Robinson said the council’s priority remains protecting access to library services for local residents while exploring the most suitable options for the future.
He said: “Southchurch Library has served the community well for many decades, but the building has now reached the end of its useful life. The condition survey shows that significant investment would be needed, and even then, it would not provide a long-term solution.
“Our focus is on ensuring library services continue to be available for this community. There is no proposal to close Southchurch Library services, and no option being considered would result in the loss of library provision for this community.”
The council has confirmed it remains committed to maintaining its network of six libraries across Southend while a full options appraisal is undertaken to determine the best way forward for Southchurch.
Cabinet members also noted that the next stage of work will examine the implications of each potential option, including how library services would be delivered during any transition period.
Further updates are expected once the options appraisal has been completed and recommendations have been developed.
