Poppies on the Pier was officially opened this morning by The Worshipful The Mayor of Southend-on-Sea, Councillor Nigel Folkard.
The installation transforms the world’s longest pleasure pier into a breathtaking sea of red to honour those who served and sacrificed in times of war.
From today (5 November) until Sunday 16 November 2025 (10:15am to 5pm daily), visitors can walk the 1.33-mile pier – now the UK’s largest Remembrance art installation – and experience an unforgettable tribute created by thousands of volunteers across the globe.
The striking display features:
- 110,471 knotted and crocheted poppies
- 4,872 metres of knitted and crocheted chains
- 1,578 kilometres of wool
Each poppy has been lovingly handmade by volunteers, from local crafters to contributors as far away as Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, with every stitch representing love, remembrance and unity.
The installation not only stands as a moving tribute to those who served in the First and Second World Wars but also celebrates the powerful sense of community and pride in Southend that brought it to life.
Throughout the event, the pier will become a 1.33-mile outdoor museum, sharing stories of Southend Pier’s crucial role during both world wars – from serving as a military departure point to being used for radar operations and D-Day preparations.
Councillor Matt Dent, Cabinet Member for Business, Culture, Music and Tourism, said:
“Seeing the pier lined with tens of thousands of poppies is truly breathtaking. What began as a creative idea has become a deeply moving tribute that stretches as far as the eye can see.
We are so grateful to everyone who knitted, crocheted and posted their poppies from near and far. It’s an unforgettable reminder of love, respect and remembrance.”
Councillor Daniel Cowan, Leader of Southend-on-Sea City Council, added:
“Walking the pier today and seeing the poppies in place is profoundly moving. Poppies on the Pier captures the very best of Southend – creativity, compassion and community spirit. This project has united people across the city and around the world in remembrance and gratitude. It is a moment of pride for Southend and a lasting symbol of what we can achieve together.”
The Royal British Legion will be present throughout the event, hosting a Poppy Appeal stall on the pier where visitors can pick up their own poppy and contribute to this vital cause.

Led by Southend-on-Sea City Council, Poppies on the Pier has been made possible through the dedication of local organisations, community groups, schools and businesses, who have all come together to create a remarkable tribute that will be remembered for generations to come.
