The magic of Christmas is returning to Southend in spectacular style as Christmas in the City 2025 prepares to light up the High Street on Saturday 15th November. The annual Southend Christmas Lights Switch-On promises a day full of festive sparkle, live entertainment, and community spirit, capped off with a fireworks finale on the seafront at 7.30pm.
The High Street will transform into a winter wonderland, bustling with festive markets, local performers, and the sweet sound of Christmas choirs. BBC Essex presenters Paul Lovett, Genieve Mullen, Sonia Watson, and Rob Jelly will host the main stage, capturing the energy and excitement live on air. The crowd can look forward to a community sing-along led by the Rock Choir, before The Worshipful Mayor, Councillor Nigel Folkard, officially flicks the switch to illuminate the city in thousands of twinkling lights.
The festivities don’t stop there. Southend City BID has announced HARP, the city’s homelessness charity, as the official charity partner for this year’s event. HARP will use the day to raise vital funds to help provide housing, advice, and support for people in need this Christmas.
BID Manager Suzanne Gloyne said: “We’re delighted to be bringing the community together again for a day that truly celebrates Southend’s creativity and spirit. With BBC Essex joining us on stage and HARP as our charity partner, this year’s celebration will be our most heart-warming yet.”
Adding an extra sprinkle of festive fun, a possible Elf on the Shelf Trail is also expected to appear in the city centre. Organised by Southend City BID, this charming activity will invite families to explore the High Street and spot hidden elves in shop windows. Children who find them all could be in with a chance to win a special festive prize, adding playful excitement to the city’s celebrations.
From the returning Storytelling Bus to brand-new decorations, Christmas trees, and children’s rides, Christmas in the City 2025 is set to be Southend’s most magical yet — a true celebration of lights, laughter, and community spirit.
