Southend United slipped to their first league loss since September after a spirited 2-1 defeat to Carlisle United at Roots Hall in the Enterprise National League.
The visitors made a fast start under the lights, taking a two-goal lead inside 20 minutes through Chris Conn-Clarke and Regan Linney. Despite a determined response from the home side, including a smart finish from Sam Austin to halve the deficit, Southend couldn’t find an equaliser as Carlisle held on for all three points.
Manager Kevin Maher made four changes from Wednesday’s draw at Woking, with Ben Goodliffe returning to defence following suspension, while Josh Walker, Cav Miley and Oli Coker also came into the starting line-up.
Carlisle looked threatening early on and broke the deadlock in the 19th minute when Conn-Clarke capitalised on a misplaced pass and curled a precise shot into the bottom corner from 20 yards. Ten minutes later, Conn-Clarke turned provider, slipping a pass to Linney, who calmly slotted home to double the visitors’ advantage.
Southend responded well and quickly found a way back into the game. Nathan Ralph’s low cross was met by Austin, who converted first time at the near post to give the Shrimpers hope. The hosts pushed hard before half-time, with Coker and Miley both forcing saves from Carlisle keeper Gabe Breeze.
The momentum continued after the restart as Walker twice went close to levelling the score—first from a tight angle and then with a powerful header that was denied by Breeze. Gus Scott-Morriss also saw a header cleared off the line, while Southend had two penalty appeals waved away as they piled on the pressure in search of an equaliser.
As the match entered its final minutes, Southend committed bodies forward, leaving space at the back for Linney to counter. However, goalkeeper Nick Hayes stood firm to prevent further damage.
Despite dominating much of the second half, Maher’s men couldn’t find the goal their performance deserved.
The defeat ends Southend’s unbeaten run in the league, while Carlisle’s win sees them return to the top of the table. The Shrimpers remain in seventh position as they look to bounce back in their next outing.
