Southend United’s summer signing, defender Harry Boyes, has made an assured start to life with the Blues, impressing in his first competitive appearance during the club’s 3–0 away win last weekend.
The 22-year-old described the performance as “a great way to start,” though he admitted the scoreline could have been even more emphatic. Having joined the club a couple of months ago, Boyes says he has settled quickly thanks to the warm welcome from teammates and staff.
Previously on the books at Sheffield United, Boyes has had experience in both the Football League and National League through a number of loan spells. Now part of Southend’s squad on a permanent basis, he’s relishing the chance to enjoy a full season of regular football.
Boyes is also reunited with forward Andrew Dallas, a former teammate, and says he played a part in encouraging the striker to make the move to Roots Hall.
Looking ahead to Southend’s upcoming home fixture against Tamworth, Boyes is eager to experience the Roots Hall atmosphere in a competitive match for the first time. “I’ve heard so much about the fans – I can’t wait,” he said.
Despite the strong opening result, Boyes insists the team will remain grounded and focused. “We’ve still got to do our job,” he emphasised, adding that his personal aim is to contribute with assists, keep clean sheets, and give supporters plenty to cheer about.
With five fixtures scheduled over the next 16 days, Boyes believes squad depth will be vital. “The more games, the better – rotation will be key,” he said.
Southend fans will be hoping his debut is a sign of things to come as the Blues look to build on a winning start to the campaign.
