Would you be surprised to learn that 12,854 children in Southend and Rochford live in relative poverty? This number shocked charity founders Anna and Scott Baker, inspiring them to set up a local registered charity, Packed with Smiles (PWS). Poverty affects children in many ways, including lack of access to food, warmth, and appropriate clothing, such as school uniforms. This is where Packed with Smiles steps in, providing essential support to help children feel equal, confident, and fully able to participate in school.
Making a Difference Since 2018 Since its launch in 2018, Packed with Smiles has delivered over 2,200 parcels, containing more than 22,000 items of clothing. In 2023, demand for the charity’s services doubled compared to the previous year, making fundraising more crucial than ever.
Co-founder and Chair of Trustees Anna Baker said,
“We seek funding from organisations like the National Lottery, regular personal donations, and local fundraising events. Local fundraising is key because it helps us raise both funds and awareness. This aligns with our goal that families feel valued by their community, knowing people care enough to offer support.”
Upcoming Fundraising Event – Christmas Wreath Making Packed with Smiles will host its second annual Christmas Wreath Making fundraiser on 8th December. PWS Ambassador Faith Horsley commented,
“We are very lucky to have the beautiful Diversity studio as a venue, which is also sponsored by Paul Robinson Solicitors. Guests will be guided by the Flourish & Bloom floristry team to create a stunning wreath, accompanied by mince pies and mulled wine. It’s a great way to kick off the festive season and support a local cause.”
The Impact of PWS On the effects of the charity’s work, Co-founder and Trustee Scott Baker said,
“We receive a lot of positive feedback after children get uniform parcels. Better school attendance, better engagement with learning, and simply, happier, more confident children. That’s what PWS is about really, helping little people forge their own futures.”
