Havens Hospices is calling all talented artists to help transform penguins into ice-quisite masterpieces for their upcoming art trail, Waddle-on-Sea.
Waddle-on-Sea, created by Havens Hospices and Wild in Art, will feature over 30 large penguin sculptures sponsored by local businesses and designed by artists. In addition to the large penguins, huddles of baby penguins will be adopted and decorated by schools, community groups, and organizations.
Each unique, individually designed penguin will be part of a spectacular outdoor art trail in the summer of 2025 across Southend-on-Sea. After the event, the sculptures will be auctioned off to help fund free specialist care for local families facing complex or incurable conditions provided by Havens Hospices.
Calling All Artists
The charity is encouraging both amateur and professional artists to bring their creativity to life. Artists can submit up to two designs by 31st October. Once submitted, the designs will be shortlisted and selected by sponsors to appear on the trail.
Local Inspiration
Last year, local artist Neil Fendell created two spectacular sculptures for the Herd In The City trail: ‘Rock ‘n’ Glow’ and ‘Never Forget’. Neil shared his passion for public art, saying:
“Art trails engage everybody. It’s visible, accessible, and not elitist – it’s for the public. Havens Hospices does such important work, and I loved being part of previous trails.”
Why Get Involved?
By participating in Waddle-on-Sea, artists can make a real difference. Not only will their work be prominently displayed throughout the city, but the art trail will also bring economic, social, and cultural benefits to Southend-on-Sea. Additionally, previous art trails hosted by Havens Hospices, such as Hares About Town and Herd In The City, have raised over £1 million.
Unleash Your Creativity!
Vanessa Harvey, Project Manager for Waddle-on-Sea, says:
“Unleash your creativity and make a lasting impact by transforming one of our penguins into a fin-tastic masterpiece for Waddle-on-Sea! Whether you’re an amateur or professional artist, this is your chance to showcase your art and support a worthwhile cause.”
