Southend Pier is set to host the Nao Santa Maria, a full-size replica of Christopher Columbus’s 1492 flagship, from July 1st to 7th, 2025. Visitors can explore the ship’s four decks, including the Admiral’s cabin and crew quarters, between July 2nd and 6th.
Following last year’s successful visit of the Galeón Andalucía, this event continues Southend’s tradition of bringing iconic tall ships to the world’s longest pleasure pier.
Cllr Matt Dent, cabinet member for business, culture, music and tourism, said: “The Santa Maria is a major attraction, offering a unique chance to experience a piece of world history firsthand. Southend is proud to host such a remarkable vessel.”
Shipwreck Exhibition Unveiled
In addition to this global maritime icon, Southend Central Museum will open The London Shipwreck: Her Final Voyage on 31 May 2025. The exhibition showcases never-before-seen artefacts recovered from the wreck of the London, a 17th-century warship that exploded in the Thames Estuary in 1665, killing around 300 people, a tragedy recorded by Samuel Pepys.
Rare Artefacts on Display
Highlights include a rare 17th-century gun carriage, navigational tools, and personal items conserved through Historic England’s research and conservation efforts led by Senior Archaeological Conservator Angela Middleton.
The exhibition tells the story of the London’s final voyage and the journey of the artefacts from seabed to display, providing a powerful local connection to maritime history.
Together, these events offer residents and visitors a unique opportunity to explore both local and global maritime heritage throughout the summer.
