Foulness Heritage Centre

Housed in what was once the village primary school, this community-driven attraction offers a rare glimpse into the unique heritage, archaeology, and rural life of Foulness Island. It’s the sort of place that rewards curiosity – and those willing to venture off the beaten track.

From Schoolhouse to Story Hub

Back in 2002, a passionate group of local volunteers from the Foulness Conservation & Archaeological Society (FCAS) rolled up their sleeves and transformed the old Foulness Primary School into a heritage centre for the island. Thanks to a generous mix of local donations, grant funding from ‘Awards for All’, and support from QinetiQ and the Bishop of Bradwell’s Fund, the project came to life. It officially opened its doors in February 2003 and has been welcoming curious minds from across the UK – and even overseas – ever since.

When Can You Visit?

The centre isn’t open every day, which makes a trip there feel even more special. You can visit on the first Sunday of each month from April to October, between 12pm and 4pm. Visitors are allowed access to Foulness Island from 11:45am onwards, and it's important to note that due to MOD Shoeburyness’ security, you’ll need to stick to the designated spine road – no scenic detours allowed!
