MP’s Column: It’s Been a Busy First 100 Days!
October 12th marked my first 100 days as an MP, and what an exhilarating journey it has been! In this time, I’ve participated in 17 votes in Westminster, delivered three parliamentary speeches, met with 18 key stakeholders from Southend—such as the police and hospital representatives—and attended 33 community events.
A particular honour has been meeting local charities, voluntary services, and community initiatives, including Achievement Through Football, Raw Learning Forest School, and Project Southchurch.
Elevating Local Projects & Voices
Wherever possible, I’ve aimed to highlight these organizations and share their feedback in my parliamentary role. For instance, I mentioned Raw Learning in a House of Commons speech on SEN issues, and in my Maiden Speech, I discussed the Kursaal and Freight House regeneration projects.
I also had the privilege of participating in a commemorative parachute jump in September, the second of two this year with former military colleagues. The event marked the 80th anniversary of Operation Market Garden, which took place in Arnhem in September 1944. All donations supported the fantastic Essex mental health charity, Trust Links. It was a sobering and meaningful day, providing an opportunity to honour those who fought against fascism.

Facing Early National Challenges
Of course, the ‘first 100 days’ have not been all community visits and parachuting. Nationally, it’s been a period of tough decisions aimed at protecting essential services and fostering economic confidence.
Locally, several recent high-profile incidents have left Southend residents feeling concerned about safety. My top priority is collaborating with the police to establish a zero-tolerance approach to violence and crime. Additionally, I believe eradicating anti-social behaviour includes regenerating the city centre, so I’m closely working with the council to support their vision for a revitalized Southend.
Looking Forward with Optimism
I remain confident that the coming years will bring positive growth to Southend. Our area is brimming with creativity and potential, and I feel certain that, together, we can make the most of these opportunities for a brighter future.
