Southend United showed resilience on Tuesday night as they fought back from behind to secure a deserved 1-1 draw away at Boreham Wood.
The home side struck first through former Blues forward Matt Rush midway through the second half, but substitute Josh Walker found the equaliser late on, ensuring Kevin Maher’s men travelled back to Essex with a share of the spoils.
Bright start for Blues
The Shrimpers began with real intensity and thought they had the lead inside six minutes when Andrew Dallas nodded in after Gus Scott-Morriss’ effort was heading goalwards. Celebrations were cut short, however, by the assistant referee’s flag.
Southend continued to press as Sam Austin’s long-range strike was tipped over by on-loan goalkeeper Finlay Herrick, while Ben Goodliffe’s header soon after was clawed away. The visitors also appealed strongly for a penalty when Goodliffe appeared to be pulled down, but referee Alex Chilowicz waved play on.
Despite dominating the early exchanges, the tempo eased as the half progressed, and Boreham Wood slowly grew into the contest. Their only notable opening before the break came via a Jeff King free-kick which was deflected wide.
Second-half drama
After the interval, Southend nearly fell behind when Ndi’s interception fell kindly towards Rush, only for James Morton to intervene. The match then saw its first flashpoint when Tom White and Scott-Morriss clashed near the dugouts, with both players cautioned.
Controversy followed soon after as Keenan Appiah-Forson’s cross struck the arm of Chris Bush inside the box, but again no penalty was awarded. Almost immediately, the Shrimpers were punished. Rush turned neatly on the edge of the area and drilled a low shot into the bottom corner to give Boreham Wood the advantage.
Walker delivers
With the game slipping away, Maher introduced attacking reinforcements, and they made the difference. From a late corner, Goodliffe’s header found Dallas, whose touch set up Walker to smash home from close range with nine minutes left on the clock.
Southend pushed for a winner through eight minutes of stoppage time, but neither side could find a decisive breakthrough. Still, the 834 travelling supporters went home satisfied with their team’s fighting spirit.
